Mexican 50 Pesos Gold Coins (Centenario)
Commemorating Mexico’s freedom from Spanish rule, the centenario, or 50 Peso Mexican gold piece, is a historical Mexican coin that offers excellent bullion value. The coin’s low premium over spot makes it an affordable item for investors looking to diversify their bullion portfolio.
First minted in 1921 and believed to be one of the largest gold bullion coins minted for currency, it measures 37 mm in size and contains 1.20565 Troy ounces of pure gold with a fineness of .900 for a net gold weight of 37.5 grams. An attractive portfolio builder, the centenario has the same gold purity as the popular pre-1933 U.S. gold coins.
On the coin’s obverse, a portrait of the Winged Victory (El Angel) is featured with the iconic Mexican volcanoes Ixtaccihuatl and Popocateptl to either side in the background. It shows the date 1821 to the left, to mark the first year of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The reverse features the Mexican coat of arms with an eagle holding a serpent in its beak while perched atop a cactus.
