On the coin’s obverse, a portrait of the Winged Victory (El Angel) is featured with the iconic Mexican volcanoes Ixtaccihuatl and Popocateptl to either side in the background. It shows the date 1821 to the left, to mark the first year of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The reverse features the Mexican coat of arms with an eagle holding a serpent in its beak while perched atop a cactus.
